Scuba diving is a truly rewarding activity and starting in the right setup makes it even more fun. This setup is much more defined by the instructor rather than by the dive center itself. When trying scuba diving for the first time, you might encounter lots of challenges but with the right instructor you will overcome them. There are signs which show that an instructor is a good professional. First and foremost, the best instructors have a good attitude. We will underline just some of them, for you to ask your friends when they recommend somebody or to interview your potential instructor directly. These are behaviours you can consider best practice for a scuba diving instructor:
1. The instructors makes scuba diving accessible. They start off with easy exercises, focus on clear explanation, have an encouraging attitude and don`t rush the student. They also don`t use too much technical language in order to look smart. A true professional is friendly, positive, communicates clearly and gives you the trust to believe in yourself and evolve as a beginner diver.
2. The divers always work in pairs, helping each other, put their equipment on and checking on each other. The instructor is present near the students all the time when they are close to or in the water but he lets them work independently, intervening only to correct mistakes.
3. When taught by a professional instructor, students spend much time swimming or floating motionless in mid-water, not so much dive kneeling on the bottom. Also, they swim almost horizontally rather than at 45 degrees, head up feet down.
4. The instructor is always willing to spend more time with a student that does not understand something, reaching towards genuine communication, focusing constantly on self-rescue skills, encouraging students to repeat and master them.
5. Student divers put their gear together themselves before every water session and break it down again after every water session. Also, they are wearing equipment and thermal protection that looks similar to the instructor`s equipment. Nothing less.
